Warriors coach Don Nelson sidelined with pneumonia, will miss road trip

Warriors coach Don Nelson sidelined with pneumonia, will miss road trip DALLAS Warriors coach Don Nelson has pneumonia and will not be with the team for today's game against the Dallas Mavericks and Wednesday's game at San Antonio. He might miss Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers, as well.

"He's sick as a dog," general manager Larry Riley said. "He wasn't doing well when we were playing Portland. He is really sick. He wanted to make the trip, but (team doctor Dr. Robert Albo) didn't want to let him go. Of all the trips he would want to make, this would be one of them."

A team source said Nelson was tested for swine flu, and the Warriors are waiting for results.

Assistant coach Keith Smart will take over as head coach until Nelson returns.

The Warriors have something going around the franchise. Guard C.J. Watson is still recovering from swine flu and did not make the trip. Neither did play-by-play man Bob Fitzgerald, who is also under the weather.

Nelson missed practice Sunday and Monday. He then met with Albo, who diagnosed him with pneumonia and pulled him off the two-game Texas road trip. Albo prescribed medication and a week of rest, which would keep him out of action at least until Monday's game against Indiana.

Of course, there is no telling if Nelson will heed the doctor's wishes. He had to be talked out of coming on the road trip, Riley said. Nelson's wife, Joy, will stay with him in the Bay Area to help make sure he takes his medicine and gets his rest.

In the meantime, Smart will get his first chance to steer the Warriors solo. Smart, who already had been given the keys to the defense, has some experience. He has run the Warriors when Nelson has received ejections and when Nelson has decided to act as an assistant.

Notes: Center Andris Biedrins was re-evaluated Monday. An MRI revealed a strain. He did not join the team on the road trip. He will be re-evaluated next Monday, which likely puts him out of action the next four games. ... Forward Corey Maggette sat out of practice with an injured left hamstring. He did make the trip, but he's a game-time decision. ... Swingman Kelenna Azubuike returned to the Bay Area after successful surgery on his left knee in Phoenix. Azubuike is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing his patellar tendon. ... Warriors radio announcer Tim Roye will replace Fitzgerald on the television broadcast during the road trip. Dave Flemming will assume Roye's radio responsibilities.TODAY: at Mavericks, 5:30 p.m. TV: CSNBA. Radio: 1050-AM.
