Howard will see limited duty Swingman won't be rushed into action after ankle surgery

Howard will see limited duty Swingman won't be rushed into action after ankle surgery Josh Howard was bouncing around the practice court at American Airlines Center on Monday, moving quickly from photo station to photo station.

He might not be doing as much moving around when practices and exhibition games start, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

Cuban said the Mavericks plan to be very conservative while bringing the 6-7 swingman back from off-season ankle surgery.

"It'll be our choice," Cuban said. "We're just not going to take the chance. I don't really see us pushing him in the preseason at all. Just bring him along slowly. He'll play, but he'll be limited."

The Mavericks are planning to start Howard in the backcourt alongside Jason Kidd, with Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki at forwards.

Cuban said he is not overly concerned about getting Howard and Marion on the court together during the preseason.

"They're not 22," he said. "They know how to play."

Nowitzki added that getting Howard healthy is the biggest priority.

"We were really good last year with him in the lineup," Nowitzki said.

Howard missed 30 games last year, mostly because of ankle and wrist problems.

Taking the high road: Nowitzki knew precious little about the woman he dated for more than a year and was engaged to, the Mavericks' superstar said during media day.

But he also said he is not interested in dredging up the past now that it appears the situation has been put to rest - although the possibility of legal ramifications exists.

When asked about what he knew of Taylor's past, Nowitzki said: "Not a lot, really. I don't want to really get into all that. There's been a lot of dirt and mud thrown around. But I don't like to get into all that stuff - what did she say, what did he say. I like to think of myself as a gentleman. I always have, and I'm not going to get into all that. I consider it over and I'm moving on."

But when asked if he thought the Cristal Taylor issue was over legally, he added: "I've got to talk to my lawyer about that."

Briefly: The Mavericks signed longtime NBA center Jake Voskuhl to a non-guaranteed training camp contract. The 6-11 Houston native has been with numerous teams through his nine-year career. His signing means 16 players are in camp, with 17 on the roster. Shawne Williams is not with the team as the Mavericks seek a trade for him. ... The Mavericks start two-a-days today and will have the annual Fan Jam on Friday night at American Airlines Center.
