DRAFT PICKS:
Rodrigue Beaubois, G, 6-2, France (first round) -- Mavs like his extraordinary wing span, quickness and leaping ability, but he's more a piece for the future than a title run next season. Nick Calathes, G, 6-5, Florida State (second round) -- Taken by Minnesota at No. 45 and then acquired by the Mavs, who have been fans for some time. He could gain seasoning next year in Greece.
Ahmad Nivins, F, 6-9, St. Joseph's (second round) -- Taken with the 56th pick, the Mavs hope his experience as a four-year college player will translate into immediate spot help on the blocks.
PLAYER NEWS:
--G Rodrigue "Roddy' Beaubois indeed will not be heading to Europe for next season, just like the Mavericks had said. The team's first-round draft pick signed his rookie contract and is guaranteed nearly $1.9 million over the next two seasons. The 6-2 Frenchman will begin his NBA tutelage at the Summer League in Las Vegas.
Beaubois, who will battle J.J. Barea for minutes behind Jason Kidd, averaged 10 points, 2.5 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 29 games in the French A-League last season.
--F Jerry Stackhouse knows he's played his final game for the Mavericks. He's on his way to Toronto in the Shawn Marion deal, but the Raptors are expected to buy him out, making the veteran swingman an unrestricted free agent. Stackhouse has said he'd like to return to the Eastern Conference, but isn't ruling out playing for a Western Conference contender. Stackhouse missed all but 10 games last season with a right foot injury. Only $2 million of the $7 million due on the final year of Stackhouse's contract is guaranteed. Stackhouse will have to wait a little longer to discover where he ultimately lands, but the bigger question is if the 34-year-old has anything left in the tank.
--C Erick Dampier remains with the Mavs, but he must wonder for how much longer. Dallas gave restricted free agent Marcin Gortat a five-year, $34 million offer, only to see the Magic match the deal to keep him. The Mavs have Dampier and Ryan Hollins at the center position. Dampier has two years remaining on his contract, but his final season is not fully guaranteed. It's been no secret that the Mavs are dangling his virtual expiring contract. However, he's due more than $10 million this season, possibly making him a tough sell.
Dampier averaged 23.0 minutes last season, the fewest in his career going back to his rookie season in 1996-97 with Indiana. He averaged 5.7 points and 7.1 rebounds, his lowest rebounding total since 2002-03 with Golden State.
MEDICAL WATCH:
--F Josh Howard (left ankle/wrist surgery) will continue to rehab with the Mavs and is expected to be at full strength for the start of training camp.
--G J.J. Barea (left shoulder surgery) will continue to rehab with the Mavs and hopes to play for the Puerto Rican national team in August in the FIBA Americas tournament.
