--C Drew Gooden made his first start with the Mavs on Sunday in Detroit. Expected to compete for the starting job in training camp, Gooden has been relegated to reserve duty behind Erick Dampier. Dampier, however, was out of the lineup with an illness, and Gooden had his first double-double (11 points and 11 rebounds) with Dallas.

--G Jason Kidd recently moved past Clyde Drexler into sixth place on the all-time steals list. He has 2,212 for his career, after swiping up another two Sunday at Detroit. Scottie Pippen is next up with 2,307. Kidd also ranks third all-time in assists and ninth in 3-pointers.

--G Roddy Beaubois continues to impress despite a small playing sample. Starting his third game Sunday at Detroit, the rookie scored a season-best 14 points and made all six of his shots. Beaubois also had four assists and two steals, displaying both his quickness and jumping ability at both ends of the court.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--F Tim Thomas (knee surgery) is rehabbing from surgery. He has begun going through at least part of practice, but no timetable has been set for his return.

--G Josh Howard (sore ankle) is back on the inactive list. He played in three games before missing Friday night at Minnesota. No timetable has been set for his return.

--C Erick Dampier (illness) missed Sunday's game at Detroit. He had started the first nine games of the season. He was taken to a local hospital for overnight observation and wasn't going to join the team in Milwaukee.
