Dallas Mavericks Roster Report 2009-10-16

Dallas Mavericks Roster Report 2009-10-16ANALYZING STARTERS:

G Jason Kidd is back after briefly testing free agency this summer. He's lost a step, which is problematic against the West's speed demons, but Kidd is still one of the best quarterbacks around.

G Josh Howard is moving into the backcourt at shooting guard and rehabbing after ankle surgery. He'll need to improve his ball handling, but his length and athleticism on the perimeter are keys defensively.

F Shawn Marion is out to prove his mediocre numbers in Miami and Toronto were a product of the system. The do-everything and guard-everyone swingman impacts the game without needing a play to be run his way.

F Dirk Nowitzki is looking to put a painful offseason behind him by focusing on basketball. He's excited about the additions and increased versatility of the roster. He's still one of the game's best.

C Drew Gooden could be the starting center most nights over last season's starter Erick Dampier. He hasn't been able to stick with one team despite solid numbers throughout his career. Is that a red flag?

G Jason Terry is the reigning NBA Sixth Man of the Year and a deadeye assassin off the bench. He'll close out games in the fourth.

G J.J. Barea has seen his role continue to grow as Kidd's backup. He has quickness and the ability to finish in the lane despite lacking great size.

C Erick Dampier won't play as prominent a role now that Shaquille O'Neal has vacated the West and Yao Ming is out for the season with an injury.

F Tim Thomas is a three-point specialist coming off knee surgery.

F Tim Thomas (knee surgery) is rehabbing from surgery on Sept. 22. The free-agent signee was injured working out this offseason. He's not expected back for at least the first month of the season.

F Josh Howard (ankle surgery) is not at 100 percent. He'll be limited throughout October with the goal of being healthy sometime in November.

F Shawn Marion (calf strain) is day-to-day.
