Dallas Mavericks Roster Report 2009-10-08

Dallas Mavericks Roster Report 2009-10-08PLAYER NEWS:

--G Jason Kidd is heading into his 16th season and he's raring to go. Unlike last summer, Kidd didn't have any Team USA commitments.

"I feel great," he said. "I felt great last season and I feel like there is a lot in the tank left. My legs feel great and my mind is fresh. I had a great summer. I got to relax and get away and let the mind and body heal, and now the marathon begins." --F Drew Gooden is in the running to be the starting center. The 6-foot-10 Gooden, in his eighth season, has taken the complete tour of NBA frontlines.

"I came into this league as a 3 (small forward)," he said. "Now, I spent last year starting at 5 (center) for Chicago. At this point in my career, I've played against pretty much everybody, and I think I can adjust."

--G Jason Terry was instant offense off the bench last season, running away with the Sixth Man of the Year award. He just doesn't want to be doing it alone this year. Terry is excited about the additions of Drew Gooden, Tim Thomas and Quinton Ross.

"Our lineup is very versatile," Terry said. "We've got great role players and that's the upgrade we'll see. Whoever we have out there starting is one thing, but now our bench is going to be productive and that's where we have been lacking."

--F Josh Howard (ankle surgery) is not at 100 percent. He'll be limited throughout October with the goal of being healthy sometime in November.

--F Tim Thomas (knee surgery) is rehabbing. The free-agent signee was injured working out this offseason. The surgery was considered and no timetable has been set for his return.

Rodrigue Beaubois, G, 6-2, France (first round) -- Mavs like his extraordinary wing span, quickness and leaping ability, but he's more a piece for the future than a title run next season.

Nick Calathes, G, 6-5, Florida State (second round) -- Taken by Minnesota at No. 45 and then acquired by the Mavs, who have been fans for some time. He could gain seasoning next year in Greece.

Ahmad Nivins, F, 6-9, St. Joseph's (second round) -- Taken with the 56th pick, the Mavs hope his experience as a four-year college player will translate into immediate spot help on the blocks.
