Dallas Mavericks Roster Report 2009-09-19

Dallas Mavericks Roster Report 2009-09-19PLAYER NEWS:

--F Tim Thomas is not off to a good start with his newest club. The journeyman will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a cartilage injury in his left knee suffered while he was working out at home.

Thomas won't be ready for the start of Mavs training camp on Sept. 28 and the team hopes he will be in good enough condition to open the regular season on Oct. 27, but that will likely depend on the severity of the injury, which won't be known until team doctor T.O. Souryal gets inside the knee.

The Mavs signed the 6-foot-10 Thomas mainly for his three-point shooting ability.

--G J.J. Barea wasn't happy that Mavs owner Mark Cuban put the kibosh on his international playing hopes, just as Cuban did with Dirk Nowitzki.

While Nowitzki said he was fine with skipping the European championships in Poland, diminutive guard J.J. Barea, coming off his best season as a pro, but also recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, was told to skip the FIBA America's tournament held Aug. 26-Sept. 6.

Barea told El Nuevo Dia that he was "devastated" by the Mavs' decision because he has represented Puerto Rico in competition since he was 16.

Barea had left shoulder surgery May 28. FIBA rules give NBA teams the right to hold a player out if the player is injured or recovering from injury.

--F Dirk Nowitzki found out that he won't be a father after all, which probably comes as good news for the Mavs' perennial All-Star. It turns out that his former fiancee, Cristal Taylor, who was recently sentenced to five years in prison, wasn't pregnant, as she had claimed multiple times after her arrest.

Nowitzki had said if Taylor was pregnant that he would seek custody of the child and care for it. Taylor was arrested at Nowitzki's home last May during the second round of the playoffs.

She was sentenced to five years in Missouri for violating probation in a 12-year-old forgery and theft case.

--F Josh Howard (left ankle/wrist surgery) is expected to be at full strength for the start of training camp.

Rodrigue Beaubois, G, 6-2, France (first round) -- Mavs like his extraordinary wing span, quickness and leaping ability, but he's more a piece for the future than a title run next season.

Nick Calathes, G, 6-5, Florida State (second round) -- Taken by Minnesota at No. 45 and then acquired by the Mavs, who have been fans for some time. He could gain seasoning next year in Greece.

Ahmad Nivins, F, 6-9, St. Joseph's (second round) -- Taken with the 56th pick, the Mavs hope his experience as a four-year college player will translate into immediate spot help on the blocks.
