DRAFT PICKS: Shan Foster, G, 6-6, Vanderbilt -- Athletic swingman with above-average three-point range who will play in Italy this season.
PLAYER NOTES: --G Jason Kidd said in an interview with the Newark Star-Ledger of New Jersey that his agent and Mark Cuban didn't talk extension over the summer. Kidd, entering the last year of his contract, doesn't view that as a problem.
"I'm fine. I'm OK with playing it out," he said. "And I'm excited. I like my situation in Dallas. I have an owner who is aggressive, in the sense that he wants to win. So I'm confident we'll be pretty good. I'm sitting in a good seat."
--G Jerry Stackhouse once starred for Rick Carlisle in Detroit. Those days are long gone, but that doesn't mean the Mavs' new coach has forgotten what Stackhouse can do. Carlisle hinted that Stackhouse, despite being one of the league's premier sixth men, could be part of the starting backcourt with Jason Kidd.
Stackhouse has spent considerable time lately working out in Dallas and, according to eyewitnesses, appears to be in great shape heading into his 14th season. The other likely candidates to start alongside Kidd are: Jason Terry, Antoine Wright and Gerald Green.
--G Jason Terry recently hosted the 41st annual Celebrity Golf Classic benefiting Big Brothers and Big Sisters of North Texas and the Jason Terry Foundation. It's the first time he's leant his name and time to the event.
"I believe it's important to utilize our gifts as professional athletes, and all that goes along with that, to provide children opportunities they may not otherwise have," he said.
--G Keith McLeod heads to camp hoping to be that 15th guy on the roster. The Mavs currently have 14 guaranteed contracts, meaning at least one spot is open, barring any roster moves.
Working in McLeod's corner in his bid to back up Jason Kidd is his history playing for Rick Carlisle. Working against is a depth at the position, namely Jason Terry and J.J. Barea.
