Dallas Mavericks Notes, Quotes 2008-06-30
--Free-agent center DeSagana Diop could be headed back to the Mavs. The 7-footer, a fan and locker room favorite during his 2 1/2 seasons in Dallas, was dealt to New Jersey as part of the Jason Kidd trade in February.

The Mavs are in the market for center depth, and Diop has stated his desire to return under the right circumstances. Dallas could dangle the mid-level exception, but it's unlikely Diop could command a starting of around $5.5 million annually on the open market.

A more plausible scenario is a salary in the $2-3 million range, which is similar to the deal Diop signed three years ago after leaving Cleveland. A sign-and-trade is another option.

--Attorneys for Mark Cuban and Don Nelson have stated their cases in the arbitration hearing pitting the one-time colleagues against one another. At stake is more than $6 million in deferred salary Nelson has alleged is being withheld by Cuban.

Nelson said the money dates to the ownership of Ross Perot Jr. Cuban bought the Mavs from Perot in 2006. The case is now in the hands of the arbitrator, and it could be more than a month before a decision is rendered.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He could earn some time because you're always looking for shooting. That's usually something that transfers from college." -- Donnie Nelson on sharpshooter Shan Foster.
