Dallas Mavericks Notes, Quotes 2009-10-31

Dallas Mavericks Notes, Quotes 2009-10-31--The Mavericks followed their opening night dud with several spirited practices. The intensity on the court even led to a couple of minor scuffles, including one involving Jason Terry and Matt Carroll.

A little blood boiling was a welcome sight.

"A lot of playing hard is about habits," Rick Carlisle said. "We worked very hard in the preseason on the habits that translate into consistent hard play, consistent strong dispositions and consistent physical presence.

"Look, we took a step back in the Washington game, no doubt about it. That was disappointing, but you got to learn from it and get better."

--Experimenting with lineup combinations will likely continue as long as Josh Howard is out. The three-guard lineup of Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and J.J. Barea figures to be a big player.

Not that it can be confused for big. The Mavs often went with those three together last season. What they lack in size, they make up in playmaking and quickness.

"Coach is going to try everything until Josh gets back," Barea said. "Some guys got to step up. There are going to be some weird lineups out there. He's going to try different stuff until we get comfortable."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Everything has to start on the defensive end for us. We have enough offense on this team, but we have to get better defensively." -- Forward Drew Gooden.
