Dallas Mavericks Notes, Quotes 2009-10-16

Dallas Mavericks Notes, Quotes 2009-10-16--Dirk Nowitzki arrived at camp at 243 pounds, which is about 12 pounds lighter than last season. Entering his 12th season and 31 years old, the former MVP took it easy physically this summer. He didn't play for the German national team for the first time since coming to the NBA.

If the Mavericks are ever going to win a title with Nowitzki, it better be soon.

"We'll just see how long my window is," he said. "I'm not really worried about it. We'll just see how long it goes from year to year."

He's also realistic enough to know that it might not happen.

"I'd love that, but the sad thing is you can't really plan a championship," Nowitzki said. "It either happens or it doesn't. A lot of factors play into it with injuries. You have to have luck in the end. We'll just see. I think we have a good team and we'll take it from there."

--Jason Terry believes the retooled Mavs are as deep as any team he's played on in Dallas. The reigning sixth man of the year basically shouldered the entire scoring burden off the bench last season.

"Our lineup is very versatile," Terry said. "We've got great role players and that's the upgrade we'll see. Whoever we have out there starting is one thing, but now our bench is going to be productive and that's where we have been lacking."

Terry went so far as to compare the team with the NBA finalists of 2006.

"Well we're very similar," he said. "The versatility of playing guys at two or three different positions is going to be very helpful. We can be a top three team in this league."

MAIN REASON MAVERICKS CAN WIN: Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion are more than just shadows of their former selves... Josh Howard is physically and mentally right... Rick Carlisle gets the team to buy into defense like Avery Johnson once did.

MAIN REASON MAVERICKS CAN LOSE: The 30-somethings show their age... Locker room issues, such as playing time dissatisfaction for Erick Dampier and/or Drew Gooden splinter the group... Another in-season trade backfires.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I just want to make this team better. I want to be better and want to make my teammates better and that's what it boils down to. I always have something to prove, always." -- Forward Shawn Marion, on whether he has something to prove after sub-par stops in Miami and Toronto.
