Dallas Mavericks Getting Inside 2009-07-25

Dallas Mavericks Getting Inside 2009-07-25
In a strange twist to the offseason, the Dallas Mavericks lost one player they thought they had wrapped up and then acquired another they never figured would be available to them.

When the Mavs offered Orlando restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat a five-year contract worth more than $30 million, they seemingly believed the Magic had no intention to match. Talk locally already had Gortat taking over the starting center position for Erick Dampier and fueled speculation that the Mavs would deal Dampier and his expiring contract.

But Magic GM Otis Smith did match and the Mavs were left flat-footed and spinning a more optimistic version of the story.

"We still feel terrific about our team," said Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson. "This was an added plus. But, we've got Erick Dampier and he's more than filled that position for us in the past. We're ready to go to war with what we've got. I'm sure that we're going to continue to be active in the free-agency and trade fronts."

However, they managed to make a splash with a four-way trade that netted forward Shawn Marion from Toronto. That deal required a little help from Hedo Turkoglu. Turkoglu appeared set to leave Orlando and sign with Portland. But at the last minute, Turkoglu changed his mind and signed with Toronto, freeing up Marion.

The Mavs now have a starting five that sets up like this: Jason Kidd, Josh Howard, Marion, Dirk Nowitzki and Dampier. Jason Terry likely remains the sixth man.
