Dallas Mavericks Getting Inside 2009-12-12

Dallas Mavericks Getting Inside 2009-12-12The return of Josh Howard also means the return of small ball to the Mavericks. The versatile swingman, who has missed most of the regular season rehabbing from offseason ankle surgery, allows Rick Carlisle to use the lineup the organization envisioned before the season.

"We'll really see how good we can be once Josh comes back and everybody's healthy," Dirk Nowitzki said.

While Howard is still working his way back and Shawn Marion is dealing with a sore ankle, the pieces are finally in place. Nowitzki, Marion and Howard will likely be joined by Jason Kidd and Jason Terry in crunch time. J.J. Barea is also an option in the backcourt.

The small-ball group doesn't employ a true center. Nowitzki would play center, with Erick Dampier and Drew Gooden used in situational substitutions. Utilizing the skills of Terry, plus the other usual starters is the key.

"It's hard to keep Jet (Terry) out of the lineup," Nowitzki said. "He's just such a good scorer for us and his ability to make shots, especially down the stretch, so I'm sure once everybody's healthy we're actually going to see some of the small lineup more with Marion at the four and me at the five."

MAVERICKS 106, HEAT 93: Dirk Nowitzki and Erick Dampier led a dominating effort Friday night on the road. Dallas (16-7) is 17-2 against Miami this decade during the regular season, including 11 straight wins. Nowitzki had 25 points, and Dampier controlled the paint with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Jason Terry scored 16 points off the bench, and J.J. Barea added 12 points and 10 assists. Former Heat forward Shawn Marion added 12 points for the Southwest Division leaders.

The Mavs opened the game with a 24-7 run and never trailed in improving to 9-4 on the road. Miami was led by Dwyane Wade's 28 points and 11 rebounds. Dallas returns home Saturday to face Charlotte.
