Dallas Mavericks Getting Inside 2008-12-17

Dallas Mavericks Getting Inside 2008-12-17
The moment coach Rick Carlisle arrived in Dallas, he said the up-tempo style the team wanted to play with Jason Kidd would never work if the Mavericks couldn't play solid defense.

Defensive stops and rebounds trigger the break, and when the Mavs do it consistently, Carlisle has the stats to show that the offense is tough to stop.

When they're not playing well defensively, as happened constantly in the first half Monday against the Nuggets, they're not very good.

The Mavs' last four opponents have shot 46 percent or better, and the Mavs are 2-2 in those games, losing a double-overtime thriller to the Spurs, winning games that went down to the wire against Charlotte and Oklahoma City, and then being blitzed in their own building by Denver.

The Mavs entered Monday's game ranked fourth in the league in field-goal percentage defense (43.3).

"When you are not guarding them and when you are not making shots," Carlisle said, "you are going to suck."

NUGGETS 98, MAVERICKS 88: In their lowest-scoring game since Nov. 3, the Mavs trailed 27-15 after one quarter and never could get over the hump in several comeback bids. The Nuggets made 10 3-pointers on 19 attempts, while the Mavs made 10-of-30 attempts. Dirk Nowitzki scored a team-high 27 points, but the Mavs shot only 34.9 percent.
